John M. Gauchl, Stephen M. Pizer1,2 Departments of Computer Science I and Radiology2 University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA A fundamental approach for providing an image description in terms of visually sensible image regions is described. It involves a) the representation of the image by a structure that captures essential image information and then b) the definition of a hierarchy of components of that structure by the order of annihilation of those components as the image is continuously simplified by lowering the scale. The information-capturing "essential structure" is chosen so that image regions are associated with each structure comj>onent during the image simplification. To guarantee image simplification, successive Gaussian blurring is chosen as the means of scale lowering. We argue that an essential structure that describes shape in both the spatial and intensity dimensions will produce an image description most likely to be useful for computer or human specification of image objects. In particular, we suggest that the intensity axis of symmetry (lAS) satisfies all desirable criteria for an essential structure. With such shape-based essential structures the approach of image description via annihilation under image simplification becomes a very attractive paradigm.

Region Completion in a Texture using Multiresolution Transforms
Abstract Natural images, textures and photographs are likely to be impaired by stains. As a result a substantial portion of the image remains blurred. However, a method called region completion is adopted to fill in the tainted part by using the information from the portion left unblemished by stains. A novel method to perform this operation is proposed in this paper. The three significant sta...
متن کاملContourlet-Based Edge Extraction for Image Registration
Image registration is a crucial step in most image processing tasks for which the final result is achieved from a combination of various resources. In general, the majority of registration methods consist of the following four steps: feature extraction, feature matching, transform modeling, and finally image resampling. As the accuracy of a registration process is highly dependent to the fe...
متن کاملCalculations of Dihedral Groups Using Circular Indexation
In this work, a regular polygon with $n$ sides is described by a periodic (circular) sequence with period $n$. Each element of the sequence represents a vertex of the polygon. Each symmetry of the polygon is the rotation of the polygon around the center-point and/or flipping around a symmetry axis. Here each symmetry is considered as a system that takes an input circular sequence and g...
متن کاملWavelet Transformation
Wavelet transformation is one of the most practical mathematical transformations in the field of image processing, especially image and signal processing. Depending on the nature of the multiresolution analysis, Wavelet transformation become more accessible and powerful tools. In this paper, we refer to the mathematical foundations of this transformation. Introduction: The...
متن کاملBiorthogonal Wavelets with 6-fold Axial Symmetry for Hexagonal Data and Triangle Surface Multiresolution Processing
This paper studies the construction of highly symmetric compactly supported wavelets for hexagonal data/image and triangle surface multiresolution processing. Recently hexagonal image processing has attracted attention. Compared with the conventional square lattice, the hexagonal lattice has several advantages, including that it has higher symmetry. It is desirable that the filter banks for hex...
